Ultimately Assassin's Creed Rogue doesn't add much to the table but it does polish some of the thing from Black Flag. If you enjoyed Black Flag you will enjoy this game. I haven't played Unity so I can't compare but this game is one worth picking up.

Assassin’s Creed Rogue Review
In Assassin’s Creed Rogue, you play as Shay Cormac, an assassin apprentice with a ton of potential. After a couple missions, you get your ship and meet up with some familiar faces from the Assassin’s Creed universe. After a few missions, something goes terribly wrong in Shay’s eyes and he leaves the order. This inevitably leads him to join up with the Templars and fight the Assassins. This allows you to see what the Templars point of view is and how they think they are helping the world. The end pretty much leads right up to Assassin’s Creed III.
At this point in the series the Abstergo entertainment sections of the game are just annoying. You are constantly called numbskull by some random woman in the industry and you still have no name. Like the previous games you hack the serves get some intel and go back to the game. Thankfully these sections only last about 20 minutes throughout the whole game, unless you want to do more. We need another Desmond for this to be worth doing.
The combat feels a lot like Black Flag, but that’s not a bad thing. You will still have to counter certain enemies and break the defenses of others. If you can chain your attacks properly then you can one hit a few enemies in a row still as well. There is a new air rifle that shoots darts, this is basically like the blow gun from the last game. They also added a noob tube in a sense but it can shoot sleep grenades and berserk grenades as well as shrapnel grenades. Overall the combat will feel the same to most Assassin’s Creed game.
The ship combat pretty much follows the whole “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” motto. You will still rely heavily on your mortars to take our higher level ships and fortresses and explosives rounds to clear out smaller ships quick. The Puckle gun now shoots much quicker and when boarding ships you can use both of them. On occasion you will have enemies actually board you after ramming you. The biggest thing you will notice is the icebergs. To get to certain areas you will have to break them and they create waves that can tip certain small ships. If you are too close to the berg when it cracks though it will sink your ship and desync you. While there hasn’t been much improvement in this area, it is still very fun to plunder enemy ships.
There is a lot of side content but it ultimately becomes too easy, too quick. All you have to do is sync up with a view point and you can see everything in the area on your map. You might be stumped once or twice for a couple activates but most are go to point a and collect a certain object. This has been happening a lot lately in Ubisoft games, which is unfortunate. Another issue is the fact the you will make money hand over fist by the end of the game. I ended with 120k and nothing left worth buying. Yeah there’s weapons and outfits to buy but once you get the best sword and gun you don’t need to buy the others. The in game economy needs a bit more balance in my opinion.
For people who like to explore there is a ton of places to see in the game. There are two maps and a full New York to explore. Everything from shipwrecks to French forts will be available to explore. Best part is no matter where you go there is always SOMETHING to do in the area. Sometimes it will be hunting animals and other times it will be collecting a Viking sword to add to your collection.
Ultimately Assassin’s Creed Rogue doesn’t add much to the table but it does polish some of the thing from Black Flag. If you enjoyed Black Flag you will enjoy this game. I haven’t played Unity so I can’t compare but this game is one worth picking up.
